This brand owes its origin to the refined taste of the French market.
Created in the 1970’s, the name is taken from an avenue in Paris, beside the River Saine, that used to be home to the head quarters of SEITA(the former French tobacco monopoly).
Despite developing a loyal following, particularly in France, the Quai D’Orsay brand remains relatively unknown in the UK and made up less than 1% of the overall Habanos sales last year. This is no doubt in part due to the fact that there is only one current size in production.
However, this is all about to change as the brand was relaunched at the 2017 Habanos Festival in Havana and, along with a new and improved band, there will also be two new sizes joining the existing Coronas in the very near future.
The brand is classified as Light flavoured by Habanos S.A, making it the only light flavoured Corona in current production by Cuba.
Min Ron Nee in his classic tome, ‘An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Post-Revolution Havana Cigars’ says;
“Quay d’Orsay cigars are characterised by mild toasted tobacco taste and a faint sugary sweetness, with superimposed subtle herbaceous flavours”
In particular he describes the Quai D’Orsay Corona as “Mild, refreshing, pleasant.” This wonderful, well-balanced and approachable cigar is one of the best kept secrets of the cigar shop humidor.
